At tepeo, we’re excited that MCS – the UK’s trusted body for setting standards in small-scale renewables – has launched a pilot for new standards which cover Thermal Energy Storage Systems (TESS).*
This is a major step towards making heat battery boilers (such as the ZEB) mainstream in UK homes, creating big opportunities for heating engineers and installers who want to get ahead in low-carbon heating.
So, what’s new?
MCS is testing a new standard in two parts:
These apply to technologies like our ZEB Heat Battery Boiler, which stores heat and then releases it later to run a home’s central heating.
- How to install thermal storage systems – giving clear rules for design and installation.
- How to predict performance – a standard way to show customers what to expect before the system is actually installed.
For installers, this means less guesswork, more consistency, and the confidence of MCS certification on every job. For customers, this means they can trust that every system is designed and installed to a proven, industry-recognised standard.
Why should installers care?
New markets, new customers
Thermal storage is set to become a core part of the low-carbon mix – not just an add-on. By getting involved early, installers can offer customers something fresh alongside heat pumps and traditional boiler swaps.
Easier conversations with customers
The new performance standard means you’ll be able to show customers exactly how a system should perform. No more vague promises – just clear, consistent information that builds trust.
Stay ahead of the curve
The heating world is moving fast. With the right training, installers can future-proof their businesses and be ready for where the market is going, not just where it is today.

An installers take
“Thermal storage has always had huge potential, and the MCS TESS standard finally gives us a clear framework to deliver it. As installers, we now have the confidence to offer high-quality, compliant systems that support the UK’s transition to net zero.” – Leaping Hare Renewables, Norfolk
Backed by funding and policy
This isn’t just industry talk. Heat batteries are already included in the government’s Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund, helping cut bills in some of the UK’s hardest-to-heat homes.
On top of that, the recent Boiler Upgrade Scheme consultation looked at broadening the list of eligible technologies – and heat batteries were on the table.
That means one thing: thermal storage is on the government’s radar, and it’s only going to grow. With MCS standards in place, consumers, housing providers, and funders can be confident in the quality of installs.
How tepeo can help you
We want to make it simple for installers to grab this opportunity. Here’s what we’re doing:
- Training and support – so you’re ready for the new MCS requirements.
- Tools to make your life easier – from spec sheets to performance estimators.
- Installer-friendly design – our ZEB is a straightforward, plug-in replacement for a boiler, minimising disruption on site.

A word from us
“Heating engineers are central to the UK’s energy transition. These new MCS standards mean they’ll have the clarity and confidence to offer customers the very latest in thermal storage – and grow their businesses while doing it. At tepeo, we hope to make that journey as straightforward as possible.” – Adam Litchfield, National Sales Manager, tepeo
Looking ahead
The MCS pilot is just the beginning. With funding support growing and standards being locked in, thermal storage is about to take off.
Installers who step into this space early will be the ones customers turn to – not just for heat pumps or boilers, but for the smart, flexible systems that will let customers take advantage of the cheapest and greenest times to use energy.
